Dr. Steve Diasio Joins Mayor of London Sadiq Khan for Royal Docks Centre for Sustainability Launch
Dec 07, 2023
The School of Creativity and Innovation is proud to recognize Dr. Steve Diasio for his participation in the launch of the Royal Docks Centre for Sustainability at the University of East London, alongside Mayor of London Sadiq Khan, Mayor of Newham Rokhsana Fiaz OBE, University of East London leadership, and international sustainability experts.
Diasio, founder of the School of Creativity and Innovation and Clinical Professor of Entrepreneurship and Innovation at the University of South Florida, joined a panel on Sustainable Innovation exploring how universities, industry, government, entrepreneurs, and communities can work together to create a more sustainable and resilient future.
Building Innovation Ecosystems
The Royal Docks Centre for Sustainability represents more than a new university facility.
It is designed as an innovation ecosystem.
Located within one of London's largest regeneration areas, the Centre brings together research, entrepreneurship, emerging technology, workforce development, and community engagement.
The underlying idea is simple but powerful: complex problems cannot be solved by institutions working alone.
Sustainable innovation requires collaboration across boundaries.
During the launch, discussions focused on accelerating climate solutions through stronger partnerships, developing future skills, supporting entrepreneurship, and creating environments where new ideas can be tested and scaled.
These themes closely reflect Dr. Steve Diasio's work across creativity, innovation, entrepreneurship, experimentation, and organizational transformation.
From Ideas to Real-World Impact
One of the Centre's major initiatives is a Living Lab developed in partnership with Siemens, creating opportunities for students, researchers, businesses, and entrepreneurs to experiment with technology in real-world environments.
The model moves innovation beyond theory.
Test. Learn. Adapt. Scale.
Small experiments can generate evidence. Evidence improves ideas. Strong ideas can become solutions capable of producing wider impact.
The Centre will also support sustainable startups and build upon the University of East London's work in business incubation and acceleration.
Together, these initiatives position the Royal Docks as a place where research and entrepreneurship can translate into new technologies, ventures, skills, and opportunities.
Universities as Platforms for Innovation
The Royal Docks Centre for Sustainability also points toward a broader future for higher education.
Universities can become places where students solve real problems, researchers work with industry, entrepreneurs build ventures, communities participate in experimentation, and governments connect policy with implementation.
This is the kind of ecosystem the School of Creativity and Innovation seeks to advance.
Creativity generates possibilities.
Entrepreneurship moves possibilities toward action.
Innovation turns experimentation into impact.
Collaboration allows that impact to scale.
Dr. Steve Diasio's participation in the Royal Docks launch reflects a career increasingly centered on connecting these ideas across universities, organizations, cities, and entrepreneurial communities.
Creating the Conditions for What Comes Next
The true measure of an innovation centre will not be the building.
It will be what becomes possible because it exists.
New ideas.
New experiments.
New partnerships.
New ventures.
New skills.
New solutions.
The launch of the Royal Docks Centre for Sustainability represents an important moment for east London and an emerging model for how universities can help address global challenges through local experimentation, entrepreneurship, and collaboration.
For the School of Creativity and Innovation, it reinforces a central belief:
Innovation begins when we create the conditions for people, ideas, and possibilities to connect.
